Lenovo ThinkPad T480 - i7 8th Gen, 16GB RAM, 512GB SSD

Quad-core i7, sixteen gigabytes, half a terabyte of NVMe storage, and a keyboard people buy the whole laptop for. This is the strongest T480 we have had in some time and the inspection notes on it are as short as they get: no defects found on the matte panel, an unworn keyboard, a TrackPoint with all three buttons working, no dents on the chassis, and both batteries in healthy condition. The removable pack means you can carry a spare, which nothing else in this price range on this page allows. Being a ThinkPad it also takes a second storage drive and more memory later, so there is somewhere to go if your work grows. We tested every port including the dock connector underneath. A matte 14-inch panel is easier on the eyes over long hours than any glossy screen, which matters if you write or code for a living. For a developer, an engineer or anyone who keeps a laptop for a long time and expects to maintain it, this is the sensible choice on the page. It is heavier than the newer ThinkPads by a noticeable margin, and anyone planning to carry it every day should pick it up at the counter first.
